If theres ever been anything that is painfully present in our lives, its stress. Painfully present meaning its an unwelcome part of our daily life. Or, in other more direct terms, stress sucks!
Or does it?
Okeven I know stress is not fun. I dont like to get stressed. But if theres one thing that seeing patients for over 20 years as a chiropractor in Toronto has taught me, its that stress boils down to perception. How someone sees something is often more impactful than the stress itself.
Thats interesting because many people are trying to escape stress, avoid stress, cope with stress or manage stress. Escaping and avoiding stress are futile because there is always a challengeeither bad ones that find us, or good ones that we go looking for. Car accidents are bad and annoying while hiking to get to the crest of the mountain for the view can be good and excitingbut both are stressful!
Coping and managing with stress make a little more sense because they acknowledge that there is stress present at most times. However, it gives the stress too much power. It can appear like stress wins and this is what I must do because of it. In health care when there is pain, a problem, or a condition that persists, it means that coping or managing is not solving the problem.
I dont know about you, but I like to solve problems whenever possible! Having a lighter load to carry is better than a heavy burden to bear any day.
So, what is the solution to stress? How does someone live with stress?
Its called optimal adaptation. Commonly known as being flexible, or perhaps going with the flow, rolling with the punches. Its being able to function at optimum no matter what variables or circumstances are present.
Perhaps it can even be looked at as tolerance. What can you tolerate? Crying kids on airplanes are not a problem for me. In fact, if that parent would let me, Id gladly try and help holding or entertaining their child. For others, it ruins the whole flight or even their vacation. I was on a trip once and this couple went on for hours about the child that was on their flightdays ago!
Lets make some practical application of all this jibber jabber. People commonly comment how little time they have for making a proper meal for themselves. It stresses them out knowing they must go home at the end of the workday and prepare somethingeven worse if they are preparing it for the entire family. The alternative would be to just grab something on the way home.
The problem with taking the easy way is that in the long term it creates the most stress. Although the initial effort in making healthy meals may be more, the medium and long term benefits bring huge rewards. This strategy creates more energy, less aches and pains, better sleep, more health, etc.
The same scenario can be applied to many efforts like going to the gym, working out, getting enough sleep, and relationships, etc. If you increase the energy going into good life stress efforts, the bad life stress events become easier to handlethey will always be there, but you will be better able to adapt.
Chiropractic care is seen by many as a treatment. A way to interact with bones, muscles, tissues, and some would include nerves, so that they can heal and work properly. Some forms of chiropractic care for back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc. leave it at that. When you feel better, youre done with care. Youve dealt with the damage that resulted from the stress, but have you dealt with the stress that caused the damage?
Seeing as theres always stress, youre probably not that much further ahead when you only focus on the pain or symptom. By helping with the healing, your body is now back to where it was before the injury happened or illness happened. However, is your body better able to adapt to future stress after the treatment from the injury? Probably not.
When that treatment is extended into a level of care that continues the healing and lets the body release from old habits, recover and restore as much function as possible, then its ability and your ability to adapt will be better. In that way, your perception of the same event may be less stressful thanks to the better adaptability from chiropractic care!
This operates on the physical, chemical and emotional levels. These areas can cause a stress and the bodys reaction to each can be quite similar. At the same time, when you improve one area, it has benefits in the other two. The common thread is often the nervous system. Your nervous system is your number one ally when it comes to living with stress.
When you improve nervous system function, you improve adaptability and your perception of what is stressful changes. It becomes easier.
Back pain, neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, and other chronic health conditions that result along the way in life all have a stress component. By improving the bodys ability to adapt to those stresses, many health conditions will improve. This is because the body is better able to self regulate and coordinate function as well as healing. And thats how chiropractic works!
